Golden Hill rose with the city. It kept its scale and its independence.

Victorian houses and old trees just east of downtown, marking the southeastern edge of Balboa Park. Corner cafés, a storied supper club, a bistro, a dive, a park with a view of the bay. Alüm's corner at 25th and C sits in the middle of it — shops on the sidewalk, balconies over the street, a roof for the hour the hill is named for.

Golden Hill marks the southeast corner of Balboa Park. The golf course, the canyon trails and the Pershing bikeway begin where the neighborhood ends; the Prado, with its museums and gardens, is a long walk or a short ride.
